We went to Rotterdam for the first time, it might sound weird, but we always pass it on our way to some other towns and we never go there.
The main interest of Rotterdam for me is the harbour! It's still the biggest in Europe, but for about 20 years it was the biggest port in the world!
My passion for ports comes from the time I worked in a company which was building a software to manage harbour areas. I participated on the Setubal Harbour project, and on proposals for other harbours. I had several meeting with the clients of the harbour, which is one of the five top ports of Portugal. I was overwhelmed seeing all that huge machineries, the logistics involved...
We didn't take that many photos because the camera we like the most, didn't have battery, the other camera ran out of battery also, then I used my cell phone, but it didn't last long also... Bad luck... :(
Anyway, back to Rotterdam... The city centre is not like the other towns we have visited, you can see all kinds of buildings, some are simply huge, other are really interesting architecturally (I also like architecture). If the assemble of all these great buildings is or not beautiful will be of one's judgement!
We visited essentially the harbour area, and some boats, because it was open harbour day so all the kind of company related to port’s activity where represented, so we visited it, and then we went to a park, but we were to exhausted to go on with the visit. Next time, we'll see more of the town itself.
I really liked the part of the centre we visited. The city is separated by the Nieuwe Maas river, so they have several bridges connecting the northern and southern parts. The combination of the bridges, the port, the modern skyscrapers and a few older houses is awesome, I would say!
